The Government wants New Zealand to be the best place in the world to be a child.
The Minister for Child Poverty Reduction, is the lead Minister of this work. The work is being led by the Child Wellbeing and Poverty Reduction Group, which sits within the Department of the Prime Minister and Cabinet. The group was established in February 2018.
The vision of the Child and Youth Wellbeing Strategy (the Strategy), is that New Zealand is the best place in the world for children and young people. Part of achieving this vision includes achieving a significant and sustained reduction in levels of child poverty, consistent with the Child Poverty Reduction Act.
The Group’s purpose is to contribute to achievement of this goal by:
- embedding the child wellbeing and poverty reduction legislative framework (including the Strategy) positioning it to effect positive change for children and young people
- supporting the system to focus on the things most likely to make a positive difference to child and youth wellbeing and child poverty reduction
- influencing change and driving action across the system to advance the Government’s child and youth wellbeing and child poverty reduction objectives
The Group's role is a leadership one focused on achieving improved outcomes for children and young people and on the system as a whole. To fulfil our purpose we advise, monitor, champion, and act as a steward for the Child Poverty Reduction Act and the Strategy.
