The Lyttelton Port Recovery Plan was approved by the Minister for Canterbury Earthquake Recovery Gerry Brownlee and gazetted in November 2015. It balances the need for a speedy recovery of the earthquake-damaged Port with the wider recovery needs of the community.
The Recovery Plan provides for the repair, rebuild and reconfiguration of Lyttelton Port and the redevelopment of Dampier Bay. This includes a large reclamation for future development allowing some port activities to be shifted from the inner harbour, which can then be redeveloped for commercial and community purposes.
The Recovery Plan establishes how transport issues and the effects of construction will be managed. It addresses pedestrian access across Norwich Quay and to Dampier Bay, and identifying future locations for cruise ship births.
It also directs Environment Canterbury, Te Hapū o Ngāti Wheke, Te Rūnanga o Ngāi Tahu, Christchurch City Council and the Lyttelton Port Company to work together to develop a management plan to improve the health of Whakaraupō/Lyttelton Harbour and its catchment.
