On behalf of the National Hazards Board, the Department of the Prime Minister and Cabinet (DPMC), and the Ministry for the Environment are seeking public feedback to help develop a Long-term Insights Briefing that explores how New Zealand can strengthen its resilience to future disasters and crises caused by major hazard risks (e.g. earthquakes, pandemics, severe weather).
The Briefing will consider how global trends (e.g., climate change, technological development, and geostrategic instability) and New Zealand’s natural and social features (e.g., its natural landscape, people, political economy, and demography) will shape our future experience of significant hazards.
It will consider implications for New Zealand and identify opportunities to increase our resilience to make New Zealanders safer.
Why this topic?
In response to New Zealand’s experience of several significant hazard events (such as severe weather and the COVID-19 pandemic), numerous reviews and inquiries have highlighted the importance of increasing our focus on building resilience to risks we face ahead of time.
Our goal is to make New Zealanders safer and reduce the economic and social costs associated with disasters and crises caused by major hazard risks. Resilience-building efforts require everyone working together and a common understanding of the challenges we face.
