Greater Christchurch Group (GCG)

What we do

The Greater Christchurch Group (GCG) provided policy, planning, and monitoring support to Ministers on a broad range of regeneration issues across the greater Christchurch region.

Read more about the role of GCG.

The Greater Christchurch Group (GCG) was formed to lead and coordinate central Government's ongoing role in the recovery and regeneration of greater Christchurch following the earthquakes of 2010 and 2011. GCG operated from April 2016 until January 2021.

The GCG's focus was on supporting the transition of leadership of the regeneration of greater Christchurch from central government to local institutions.

Our vision is for greater Christchurch to be viewed as an attractive and vibrant place to live, work, visit and invest — mō tātou, ā, mō, kā uri ā muri ake nei — for us and our children after us.

The GCG worked with colleagues across government, and with Ōtākaro Limited and Regenerate Christchurch, to provide consistent and connected advice to Ministers. Our approach was to provide a whole-of-government response through regular liaison with other relevant agencies and community groups.

Our strategic intentions

Greater Christchurch is in a new phase, having shifted from recovery to regeneration. Central government's role has moved from leading and coordinating the overall recovery effort to one of effectively transitioning work to enable locally led regeneration of greater Christchurch. It is important that the recovery momentum continues to be maintained in the regeneration phase, with local leadership shaping the region.

We have set out how we will do this in our Strategic Intentions 2020/21–2023/24, and Annual Report 2019, Strategy Intention 5.
