Responsibilities include oversight of the emergency management system, coordinating the government response and recovery for emergencies caused by geological or meteorological hazards, public education about emergency preparedness, risk identification, and planning to manage emergencies. This portfolio is also responsible for leading and coordinating the government's recovery from the 2023 North Island severe weather events.
Agency support for this portfolio is provided by the National Emergency Management Agency (a departmental agency hosted by the Department of the Prime Minister and Cabinet) and the Cyclone Recovery Unit (a unit within the Department of the Prime Minister and Cabinet).
