BAGSHAW, Dr Susan Nicola (Sue), CNZM
For services to youth health
Dr Sue Bagshaw has worked in the youth health sector for 30 years, is currently Senior Lecturer in Paediatrics at the University of Otago in Christchurch, and a contract educator and Trustee for the Collaborative for Research and Training in Youth Health and Development, which she founded.
Dr Bagshaw chairs the Korowai Youth Well-Being Trust running the Youth One Stop Shop 298 Youth Health, where she runs three teaching clinics. She established the 198 youth one stop shop in 1995 where she worked as a primary care youth health specialist until its closure in 2010. She has been involved in advising the set-up of many youth health centres around the country, now known as the Network of Youth One Stop Shops. Following the Christchurch earthquakes, she collaborated with Action Works to bring together 16 youth organisations to form the first youth hub in Barbadoes Street in 2012. Most recently she has been developing a Christchurch Youth Hub - Te Hurihanga o Rangatahi, a collaboration of health and social services and transitional housing for youth. Anglican Care became involved in 2017 to help purchase a site in central Christchurch. Dr Bagshaw has been President of the New Zealand Association for Adolescent Health and Development, President of the International Association of Adolescent Health, and was a founding member and key driver of the Society of Youth Health Professionals Aotearoa (SYHPANZ).

CORLETT, Mrs Yvette Winifred, CNZM, MBE
Deceased. Her Majesty’s approval of this award took effect on 12 April 2019, prior to the date of decease.
For services to athletics
Mrs Yvette Corlett was the first New Zealand female athlete to win an Olympic Gold medal in 1952 in the long jump event.
Mrs Corlett served as Patron of Counties Manukau Regional Sports Trust for 17 years until 2009. She was Patron of Athletics New Zealand from 2003 to 2006 and served on the New Zealand Sports Hall of Fame’s Board of Governors from 1990 to 1995. She served for 40 consecutive years on the selection panel for the New Zealand Herald Junior Sports Awards. Mrs Corlett continued to volunteer her time coaching at the Panmure Young Citizens Centre.

KOOPU, Mrs Areta, CBE
For services to Māori and the community
Mrs Areta Koopu is a Director of the Māori Women’s Development Inc. and has more than 30 years’ experience in social services, in both paid and voluntary capacities.
Mrs Koopu was National President of the Māori Women’s Welfare League from 1993 until 1996 and a Human Rights Commissioner from 1996 until 2001. She has also been a member of the Waitangi Tribunal from 1996 to 2008, a member of the New Zealand Māori Council from 1987 until 1992, and a Trustee of the Māori Education Trust and Te Kohanga Reo National Trust Board from 1993 until 1996. She was a member of the National Aids Foundation and a member of the Confidential Listening Service from 2008 to 2011. She worked as a Marriage and Family Court counsellor with Marriage Guidance New Zealand for more than 20 years and was a member of Marriage Guidance New Zealand’s national body. She has been a mediator for Housing New Zealand, based in Rotorua. Mrs Koopu was a member of the Prime Minister’s Honours Advisory Committee, which conducted the review of the New Zealand Royal Honours System in 1995.

WALSH, Ms Frances Rosemary (Fran), MNZM
For services to film
Ms Fran Walsh is an Academy Award-winning screenwriter, film producer and musician.
Ms Walsh has collaborated with her partner Sir Peter Jackson on all his films since ‘Meet the Feebles’ (1989), and was nominated for her first Oscar after co-writing ‘Heavenly Creatures’ (1994). She has been the co-screenwriter of ‘The Lord of the Rings’ trilogy, ‘King Kong’ (2005), ‘The Lovely Bones’ (2009), the three-film adaptation of ‘The Hobbit’, and most recently ‘Mortal Engines’ (2018). In 2004, she shared three Oscar wins for her work on the final episode of ‘The Lord of the Rings’, including Best Song, Best Picture, and Best Adapted Screenplay. She has received a further 24 award nominations and 30 wins from the Australian Film Institute, the BAFTAs, the Grammys, the Golden Globes, and the Writers Guild of America. Her work with Wingnut Films includes producing, script writing, musical composition, casting, and second-unit directing. She has also worked on several projects outside of her partnership with Sir Peter Jackson, as a script consultant and supervisor. With Sir Peter she researched and produced the documentary film ‘West of Memphis’, which brought about the release from prison of three teenagers from West Memphis, who had been wrongly convicted of murder under questionable evidence in 1994. Ms Walsh was also involved in purchasing the site of BATS Theatre in Wellington in order to secure its future.
