The Child Poverty Unit (CPU) has been established in the Department of Prime Minister and Cabinet (DPMC) to support the Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern, as the Minister for Child Poverty Reduction.
The CPU's role includes:
- supporting the passage of the Child Poverty Reduction Bill
- supporting agencies to implement the legislation, once passed
- working with others to identify actions and policies for reducing child poverty
- providing advice on other relevant matters.

Chief Science Advisor – Child Poverty Reduction
Professor Richie Poulton CNZM has been appointed the role of Chief Science Advisor to the Minister for Child Poverty Reduction, Rt Hon Jacinda Adern. The role, established earlier this year, provides a direct line of independent advice to the Minister, with a focus on child wellbeing and poverty reduction.
