National Security and Intelligence

The Department of the Prime Minister and Cabinet (DPMC) plays a pivotal role in leading, coordinating and supporting New Zealand’s National Security System and New Zealand’s Intelligence Community.

DPMC takes the lead on advice on matters of national security and coordination for:

  • the Prime Minister (who in the present Government is also the Minister for National Security and Intelligence)
  • the Minister in Charge of the New Zealand Security Intelligence Service
  • the Minister Responsible for the Government Communications Security Bureau
  • other ministers.

One of DPMC’s core challenges is to ensure the system of executive government is trusted and regarded by New Zealanders as high-performing. As one part of meeting that challenge, the Department intends to lead an integrated, customer-orientated and trusted intelligence community and put in place world-class national security strategies, capabilities and mitigation.
